Praise Of Folly Essay Example For Students
Praise Of Folly Essay The Praise of Folly takes on a verydiverse form of life during sixteenth century Europe. In1509 the author, Desiderius Erasmus, turned his literarytalents to the ridicule and denunciation of monastic vice, immorality, and wickedness. He was considered thePrince of Humanists 1 because he was one of the mostimportant men in Europe during the period of theReformation, The historical and cultural references in hisbook proves that the Praise of Folly could not have beenwritten during any other time period except sixteenthcentury Europe. Erasmus is one of the most fascinating andinscrutable characters in history. There is no doubt that hewas a genius, He was also a bon vivant, but his tastes rantoward good conversation and good food rather thanconspicuous consumption. He whined endlessly about histroubles, and he begged shamelessly for ever more moneyfrom his patrons. But he was one of the most far-sightedindividuals to walk this planet, 2. Before any others, hesaw how the corruption and mi sdeeds of the church wouldlead to danger, and when Martin Luther hijacked Erasmusreform efforts and turned them into outright revolt, Erasmussaw that this split in Christendom would lead tocatastrophe; a catastrophe that was realized a century later. Erasmus, even from childhood, had a craving to read, study, learn and know. He spent his life as a scholar andwriter. He was a man of quick wit and a keen mind. Hehad struck a raw nerve by writing the Praise of Folly. But itmust be noted that while Erasmus found the wickedness ofthe priests revulsive, he did not disapprove of RomanCatholic doctrine. He praised himself to be a citizen of theworld, not attached 2 to a particular country but findinghimself at home in European countries where culture andhumanism were flourishing. The two societies he claimed tobelong to were both the republic of letters and the Christianchurch. In Roman Catholic doctrine, he wished only for areformation of priestly morals and conduct, not of Romantheology, and he disapproved of the doctrinal revolutioninitiated by Luther. It is said that Erasmus laid the egg thatLuther hatched, meaning that Erasmus was the one whoinspired the Protestant Reformation. The particular state ofmind which produced the modern wo rld was amanifestation of the same mind as underlay the ProtestantRevolution. The Protestant calling was a treatment ofworldly avocations as God-created and fulfillable in a spiritof worship. This concept enabled the Protestant to see inhis ordinary daily work an activity pleasing to God andtherefore be pursued as actively and profitably as possible. On the other hand, medieval and Roman CatholicChristianity were held to have condemned the world, withconsequent hostility to economic activity and especially tothat essential capitalist ingredient, the taking of interest onusury. Protestantism were therefore asserted to have beenthe necessary precondition of the growth of modernindustrial capitalism. The basic belief of Protestantismpromoted the spirit of the entrepreneur, and for that reasoncapitalism is found flourishing in reformed countries, whilethe Reformation is found spreading among the commercialand industrial middle classes. The desire for spiritualnourishment was great in many parts of Europe, andmovements of thought which gave intellectual content towhat in so many ways was an initial search for God havetheir own dignity. Neither of these, however, comes first inexplaining why the Reformation took root her and vanishedheresies led to a permanent division within the church thathad looked to Rome. This particular place 3 i s occupiedand the play of secular ambitions. The Reformationmaintained itself wherever the lay power favored it; it couldnot survive where the authorities decided to suppress it. .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093 , .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093 .postImageUrl , .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093 , .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093:hover , .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093:visited , .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093:active { border:0!important; } .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093:active , .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093 .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0be05955d78b5483f176e611edf3c093:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Michigan Auto Parts EssayFor this was the age of uniformity, an age which held at alltimes and everywhere that one political unit could notcomprehend within itself two forms of belief or worship. Latin American Independence Essays (737 words) - Americas
Latin American Independence Latin American Independence The Spanish amassed great wealth and power in their American colonies through oppression, slavery and racism. An amazing variety of classes developed and created a social gap in the people. At the turn of the nineteenth century, the American-born population began to advance towards independence. The process did not happen over night. Instead, it developed slowly due to social, political, ethnic, and economic factors, and the often bloody war for independence raged for fifteen years. Enlightenment radically altered the ideas of people in Europe and America. Ideas that challenged old truths began to develop; ideas that praised individual rights such as the notion that ultimate authority in society resides with the people, not with the king, or that all people are created equal in nature and possess equal rights. The French and American revolutions were strongly influenced by these new, bold beliefs. Inspired by the ideas of the Enlightenment and the wars for independence in other parts of the globe, Latin American gained momentum to began their own revolution. America was a mixing of many different races and each caste held specific rights and limitations. Natural born Spanish had access to the advantages and held the majority of power. The wealthy Creoles were able to ascend to positions of authority, but were always a step down the social ladder from the natural Spanish. Social inequality in America caused tension among the native population. When Spain, in an attempt to centralize their administration (spurred by the Enlightenment), began replacing Creoles with Spaniards in judicial and legislative offices, the tension was escalated even further. This challenged the position and comfort of wealthy Creoles, and motivated them to support independence. The antagonism and bitter feelings between American Creaoles and those Spaniards born in the Iberian Peninsula who came to Latin America, helped ignite the emotional tinderbox that flared in 1810. (Clayton & Conniff, 20) Creole unrest was widespread when Napoleon invaded Spain and Portugal in 1807. For the Latin American revolution, the timing could not have been better. The monarchs were disposed and Napoleon installed his brother as king. Spanish rebels fought the illegitimate Bonaparte in a civil war for six years. This left the colonies isolated and they rejected the authority of Spain. As a solution, they created local governments, of juntas, primarily filled with Creoles to rule in the kings absence. Dissatisfaction had been given ideological form by the Enlightenment, awhile the crown and peninsulares had thoroughly antagonized Creoles for decades by denying them what they considered their legitimate aspirations. Napoleons invasions of Spain, by suspending colonial loyalty to the Spanish sate, touched off the fuse to the powder keg. (Clayton & Conniff, 22) Independence took different courses between regions. Some, such as Brazil, were relatively peaceful, but others, such as Peru and Mexico, were bloody. The wars for independence distinguished many brave and courageous soldiers. The names of patriots such as Bolivar, Hidalgo, San Martin, and Artigas among many others, inspire pride in the Latin America. After the revolutions began, success did not come smoothly. Counterrevolutions took back many of the initial successes from the patriots, but tenacity and devotion finally, after fifteen years, won Latin America its freedom. Independence brought new problems and challenges. The struggle to create new legitimate forms of government created differences, and political turmoil created confusion and tension. The church was attacked for being conservative and suffocating. Revolutionaries wanted to take the churches power and lands. This created clearly defined battle lines that caused enduring problems for the new nations. One of the basic ideals of the revolution was freed for all people, but this created unexpected problems. Tributes were eliminated and Indians were given rights as citizens, but the national governments quickly realized they depended on the income obtained from the tributes. Thus, the tribute was restored. The revolutionaries also sought to give the Indians freedom, and they gave them individual property rights. The Indians who were not familiar with private ownership were easily taken advantaged. As a result of freedom and the end of the communal system, many Indians were left without protection and they slid even further down the economic ladder. Political disorder and powerful leaders attempting to regulate authority marked the period

What Is Pre-Med Key Requirements for Medical School
What Is Pre-Med Key Requirements for Medical School SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips What is pre-med? When people say that theyââ¬â¢re pre-med, what does that actually mean? If youââ¬â¢re planning to attend med school and become a doctor, itââ¬â¢s important that you understand the definition of pre-med and what you should be doing as a pre-med student. Read on to learn what it really means to be a pre-med, what you should be focusing on to get into med school, and what the best majors for pre-meds are and why. What Does Pre-Med Mean? "Pre-med" is the term people use to show that they want to go to med school and are taking the classes they need to get there. Itââ¬â¢s primarily used by college students. There isnââ¬â¢t actually a major called "pre-med;" pre-med is just a term to let people know you have plans to be a doctor. You can be a biology major and a pre-med, a Spanish major and a pre-med, etc. Students say that theyââ¬â¢re pre-med to let others know about their career goals and to make sure theyââ¬â¢re taking the correct classes to get into med school. If you tell your advisor that youââ¬â¢re a biology major, sheââ¬â¢ll focus on making sure you get all the requirements for that major completed, but if you let her know that youââ¬â¢re a biology major and also pre-med, sheââ¬â¢ll work with you to also ensure you take all the classes needed to apply to med school. Similarly, if youââ¬â¢re applying to jobs or volunteer positions and state that youââ¬â¢re a pre-med, the people looking at applications will know that you plan on becoming a doctor, and they may be more likely to offer you a position thatââ¬â¢s related to the medical field. What Do You Need to Get Into Med School? Once youââ¬â¢ve decided to be pre-med, your main focus will be preparing yourself to get into med school. Med schools are infamous for being competitive and only accepting the best, so youââ¬â¢ll want to be well prepared. In this section weââ¬â¢ll discuss all key things you need to get into med school. Classes As a pre-med, one of your most important responsibilities will be making sure you take all the prerequisite coursework required for med school. Each med school has slightly different requirements, so you should absolutely make sure you research each med school youââ¬â¢re interested in early on as a college student to make sure youââ¬â¢re on track to meet all their requirements. In general though, most med schools expect you to have taken the following classes: One year of biology with lab One year of general chemistry with lab One year of organic chemistry with lab One year of physics with lab At least one semester of biochemistry A math requirement (some schools require calculus, some require statistics, some require both) One year of English Remember, these are just the bare minimum of classes you need to meet basic requirements for med schools. Youââ¬â¢ll likely need to take significantly more classes to meet the requirements for your major and fulfill the requirements/recommendations of all the med schools youââ¬â¢re applying to. Also remember that because med schools are so competitive, you never want to stop at just the bare minimum. You want to show med schools that youââ¬â¢re motivated to learn as much about the health field as you can and that youââ¬â¢ll be entering med school with a strong knowledge in a variety of subjects. Expect to take several science classes each semester in order to be fully prepared for med school. Examples of other classes you might take include genetics, public health, ethics, microbiology, human physiology, psychology, sociology, writing classes, and foreign language classes, to name a few. Test Scores The MCAT is the exam pre-meds take. Much like you did with the SAT/ACT, youââ¬â¢ll send your MCAT scores to med schools to show them your mastery of different subject areas. The MCAT is a 7.5 hour test that includes four sections: Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems; Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems; Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior; and Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills. The average score on the MCAT is 500 (out of a total of 528 points), and the average score for students accepted into med school is around a 509, so you should aim for at least that. Health-Related Extracurriculars Almost every med school will expect you to have some sort of scientific research experience and/or experience volunteering at a hospital or other medical setting. This shows them youââ¬â¢re committed to becoming a doctor and have the skills it takes to succeed as one. Letters of Recommendation You may have needed letters of recommendation when you applied to college, and theyââ¬â¢re important for med school too. Youââ¬â¢ll likely need at least three letters of rec when you apply, often two from science teachers and one from a non-science teacher. What Are the Best Pre-Med Majors? There are a small number of colleges who offer actual pre-med majors, but those programs tend to not be very strong (no major university offers an actual major called "pre-med"), and med schools aren't particularly impressed by these degrees since, as mentioned above, any major can be pre-med as long as you take the classes required to go to med school. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, just a little over half of all students applying to med school majored in the biological sciences. The others majored in a variety of areas, including humanities, math, social sciences, and physical sciences. Additionally, med school applicants who majored in biological sciences, on average, didnââ¬â¢t score any higher on the MCAT than students who majored in other areas. So what you major in doesnââ¬â¢t necessarily determine how well youââ¬â¢ll do on the MCAT. So if youââ¬â¢re pre-med and wondering what to major in, the best advice is to choose a major that youââ¬â¢re interested in and think you can do well in while completing all the pre-med requirements. However, there are some majors that are much more popular among pre-med students than others. Below are five of the best pre-med majors. Each of them will help give you the skills needed to succeed in med school and as a doctor. We consider these the best because they match the closest with pre-med requirements. This makes it easier for you to meet all your pre-med requirements and ensures you get a solid background in subjects doctors need to be masters in. Majoring in a different area, say, Russian Literature, isnââ¬â¢t necessarily a bad idea, but you may find it difficult to complete both your Russian Literature major requirements and pre-med requirements in four years. Human Biology If there was one major that youââ¬â¢d call the unofficial pre-med major, itââ¬â¢d be human biology. At many schools itââ¬â¢s the most common major for pre-meds to take because it focuses heavily on many of the subjects youââ¬â¢ll study as a med student. Youââ¬â¢ll take classes in a variety of subjects, but the focus will be on the human body and human health. You may take classes in genetics, human physiology, and neurobiology, among other areas. Biology Biology is another solid choice for pre-meds, especially if your school doesnââ¬â¢t offer a Human Biology major and/or you want more a general biology background rather than focusing more specifically on human bodies. Youââ¬â¢ll learn plenty about human health as a biology major, but youââ¬â¢ll also likely take classes in other areas such as ecology, evolution and/or microbiology. Psychology Many pre-meds major in psychology, especially those planning on becoming psychiatrists. However, psychology is a useful major regardless of what type of doctor you want to be since every medical professional can benefit from studying how humans think, make decisions, and react to different situations. Chemistry/Biochemistry The biological sciences are most popular with pre-meds, but youââ¬â¢ll also need to know a lot of chemistry as a pre-med and a med student. Thereââ¬â¢s an entire chemistry section on the MCAT, so itââ¬â¢s definitely an important subject to know. Philosophy Although itââ¬â¢s not a hard science, a strong knowledge of philosophy can be very helpful to pre-meds. Youââ¬â¢ll learn about ethics and how to think critically, both of which are important for people in the medical field. Philosophy is a good choice if you want to be prepared for medical school but also get more of a liberal arts education. Summary What is pre-med? "Pre-med" is a term college students use to show that they plan on attending med school and are taking the right classes to do that. There are no official pre-med majors; instead students who are pre-med can major in whatever subject they want and just take the classes needed to apply to med school. There are multiple pre-med requirements needed to get into med school. The most important of these are the classes you take. Each med school has its own requirements, but you can expect to take at least one year of biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics (all with labs), along with biochemistry, math, and English classes. There is really no "best" pre-med majors, but there are some majors that are more popular with pre-med students and make it easier for you to reach pre-med requirements. These include human biology, psychology, biology, and chemistry. What's Next? Want to know what you should be doing right now to prepare for pre-med programs?
